This guy (Michael Pritchard) has a really cool water filtration device that I'm not sure many people know about.




I think having a few of these babies in the house would be a lot better than trying to find storage for the 12 or so gallons of water recommended by FEMA for an average 3-4 person household.

Dean Kamen (the guy who invented the Segway) has his own version that he showed off on the Colbert Report some time ago:

This one seems bigger, more expensive, and generally less accessible than Pritchard's, but I think there is a use for both. Kamen's seems like it would be good to hook up to the water line of my house just for regular use.

Overall, water isn't the first thing that comes to mind of Possible Catastrophes That May Soon Occur, however, it doesn't take rocket science to know that water is one of those things that we simply cannot afford a shortage of. If only for the fact that I don't feel like contributing my face to the photos of "mass throngs of panicked and thirsty people" that would inevitably take to the streets.
